Santiago sits about 120 km inland. Every Valparaíso day trip drives Ruta 68 through the Casablanca Valley, which is why nearly all of them stop at a winery on the way. Most also spend time in Viña del Mar, the beach city next door. That leaves fewer hours in Valparaíso than most people expect.
Here is how a typical day runs, how much time each tour gives the hills, what you pay and what you pay on top, when the bus makes more sense, and what to do if you arrive by ship.
The quick answer
Expect about ten hours door to door: 1.5 to 2 hours of driving each way, a Casablanca winery, Viña del Mar's beach and Flower Clock, and roughly two to three hours in Valparaíso itself. Group tours on Viator cost $37 to $111 per person, the Stamp’s Tour day trip ($75) is the most booked, and lunch is never included. If the hills are what you came for, take the bus and join a walking tour there.

How does a Valparaíso day trip from Santiago work?
A minibus collects you in central Santiago in the morning, drives Ruta 68 to the coast, and brings you back in the evening. Three stops fill the day: a winery, Viña del Mar and Valparaíso.
Pickup covers the central districts: Santiago Centro, Providencia, Las Condes and Vitacura on most group tours here, Recoleta as well at Stamp’s Tour. Your exact time comes by message the evening before. The order of stops changes by company. Stamp’s Tour goes to Viña del Mar first, walks Valparaíso after lunch and stops at the winery on the way home. Turistik starts with the winery. Best Trip Chile runs the Flower Clock and the moai in Viña before the sea lions and the hills.
Groups are small by bus-tour standards: fifteen guests at most on Stamp’s Tour, Best Trip Chile, Turistik and MTO Tour Chile, eight on the Progressive Tours street art day. A guest on Stamp’s Tour in October 2026 counted "about 10 of us from different countries".
Want the most booked day, with a funicular ride and a boutique winery? Stamp’s Tour picks up in five Santiago districts, from $75.

Usually two to three hours on the hills, out of a ten-hour day. The rest goes on the road, Viña del Mar and the winery.
The listings show it once you add up the stops. Times below are the minutes each tour lists for its Valparaíso stops, as published on Viator in November 2026.
Guests notice. A Turistik guest in April 2024: "We wanted to see more Valparaiso but it was a quite short visit." A Best Trip Chile guest in October 2026 found "some great little art and craft shops but not a lot of time to experience them really". If you want a whole day on the hills, see the bus guide.

What costs extra on the day?
Lunch on every tour, tips, museum entries on most, and the funicular where it is not included. Bring Chilean pesos in cash.
- Lunch: not included anywhere. Guides suggest a restaurant in Viña del Mar or Valparaíso and you pay for what you order. An MTO guest in October 2026 found the suggested place "pricey, but it was optional".
- La Sebastiana: only Turistik includes it. On your own, the Fundación Neruda lists a general ticket of CLP 11,000 at the door, no reservation needed (official hours and prices).
- Funiculars: a few hundred pesos a ride, in cash, where the tour does not cover it. Stamp’s Tour includes one ride, Best Trip Chile the El Peral lift.
- Tips: excluded on every listing. Guide and driver are often tipped separately.

Want the sea lions, the El Peral lift and a proper vineyard tasting for less? Best Trip Chile covers all three from $65, fifteen guests at most.
Explore the Best Trip Chile wine tourIs a tour better than going by bus?
A tour is easier and adds the winery and Viña del Mar. The bus is cheaper and gives you twice the time on the hills.
The bus from Santiago takes about 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45 and costs a few thousand pesos each way. You arrive in the lower town and can walk or ride a funicular up to Cerro Alegre within half an hour. Pair it with the Famous Valparaíso walking tour ($40, three hours) and you see more of the city than any day trip shows you.
What you give up: the winery (no bus stops there, and you would not want to drive back after a tasting), a guide on the road, and the door-to-door pickup. For a first visit with little Spanish, a tour takes the planning away. For a second day on the coast, or if the murals are the point, take the bus.
Is Valparaíso worth a day trip?
Yes, if you know you are buying a sampler. You see the hills, a lift and the murals, not the city in depth.
The historic quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2003 as the Historic Quarter of the Seaport City of Valparaíso, with Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción at its core. Most day trips cover exactly that area, which is the right choice for a first look.
If one night is possible, stay. Evenings on Cerro Alegre, sunset from the promenades and an unhurried morning in the lanes are what day trippers miss. A Chiletour guest in August 2024 put it simply: "if you have the chance stay in.Valparaiso or vina Del Mar".

Want the hills to be most of the day? The Progressive Tours street art day spends about five hours in Valparaíso, eight guests at most, from $125.
Check dates for the street art and wine dayI am on a cruise. Can I do Valparaíso as a day trip?
If your ship docks in Valparaíso, take a walking tour that meets at the passenger terminal. Check first: many ships use San Antonio, about 100 km south.
Valparaíso’s 2026-27 season opened on 17 October 2026 with 30 calls planned until 15 April 2027, Cruise Industry News reports. Passengers clear customs at the VTP terminal. Valpo in One Day ($80) meets at the terminal exit at 10 am and spends about seven hours on the city by train, trolleybus and funicular.
Embarking in Valparaíso after a stay in Santiago? Stamp’s Tour offers a drop-off at the port with one large and one small bag. The private day with Julio can collect you at the VTP terminal; the San Antonio cruise terminal is excluded on that listing.

When is the best time for a day trip?
October to April, the dry and warm half of the year. Mornings on the coast are often grey and clear up by midday.
January and February are high summer: warm, busy at Viña del Mar’s beaches, and the best time for long evenings if you stay over. Winter, June to August, brings the rain and slippery stairs. In any month, take a layer: the coast is cooler than Santiago, and the sea fog that rolls in some mornings is cold.
Wear shoes with grip. Every tour includes steep streets and stairs, and only the Progressive Tours listing says it is wheelchair accessible. For how the tours compare, read the best Valparaíso tour.
